Finis Smart Goggle The “Smart Goggle” from Finis is one of the first generation of smart swimming goggles that keeps the athlete up to date with live information about times, splits and breaks while crawling – gadget heart, what more could you want?
The swimming goggles from the Californian manufacturer come in two stylish boxes. In one there are glasses with nose bridges of different sizes, in the second the heart of the set: a small computer with a display that is clipped into the left lens of the glasses. This means that the view to the left is restricted by about a third. But that is a compromise that has to be accepted.

Automatic tracking
If the swimming goggles are set up with the associated Ciye Swim app, all you need to do is press a button and “Start Swim!” appears on the display. From now on, the glasses automatically track the entire training using motion sensors. For a series of 5 x 200 meters on the 50-meter track with a 30-second break, it looks like this: The clock starts with the goal kick, then the glasses inform you about the 50-meter split after each turn. To read the values, all you need to do is squint slightly to the left. After 200 meters, the total time can be read for a few seconds, then a new clock starts with the break time. Once 30 seconds have been reached, the next start takes place.
After training, the session can be transferred to your smartphone via Bluetooth and analyzed lane by lane in the app. The smart technology clearly shows its strengths on longer crawl routes. Unfortunately, the sensors have problems with technical exercises, legs or changing types of swimming – anyone who often swims with a sports watch on their wrist knows this. It can then happen that incorrect values are registered and the meter numbers are no longer correct when evaluated.
Technology
The time measurement worked perfectly in the test, and the evaluation with the app also provided mostly correct data for normal swimming distances (e.g. 100 meter backstroke, 200 meter individual medley or 800 meter freestyle). Unfortunately, the sensors are overwhelmed during technical exercises, which makes recording unsuitable for complex training sessions. The simply designed display was easy to read while swimming by squinting slightly to the left.

The rather stiff goggles held a good seal, but after a short time they began to press uncomfortably around the eye area of the test swimmer. This may be due to the individual face shape, but it is still a shame for swimming goggles in this price category.

Conclusion
The Smart Goggle provides exciting information in real time for pacing and motivation. However, the glasses will not soon replace the trainer stopping at the edge of the pool. The registered times are not yet precise enough for this. In the future, it would be desirable to be equipped with a GPS sensor. This would expand the functionality and make the smart goggle also interesting for open water swimmers.
